Contemporary Garden

This a garden for a young family where the priority is to allow maximum space for the children to play. The focus of the brief was to create a casual seating space for relaxing, enjoying cooking on the BBQ and summer evenings by the firepit. The existing hard landscaping consists of composite paving and softwood timber decking.

Design

The scheme is designed to reflect the contemporary architecture and interior design of the house.

A bold triptych of screens defines the new seating area.  Made from powder coated stainless steel, the screens are fixed in front of the existing Laurel hedge.  They are back lit with LED strip lights for added effect at night.  All the decking and paving is replaced with a single material, grey Indian Sandstone paving in uniform large slabs to create a streamlined, contemporary look.

Planting design in this new area consists of Acer palmatums to highlight the changing seasons and dwarf conifers for year-round structure.  Hellebores, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and Liriope muscari flower at different times of the year and Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is a late spring highlight.

A single, white contemporary bowl planter is filled with Agapanthus and Festuca to bring planting closer to the house.
